Rātana tūmuaki Harerangi Meihana dies
Mōrehu are in shock at the death this morning of tumuaki Harerangi Meihana, also known as Harry Mason.
Mr Mason, the grandson of Ratana founder Tahupōtiki Wiremu Rātana, has led the movement since 1999 but stepped back from public activities in recent years because of ill health.
He was 87.
East Coast MP Kiritapu Allen says it’s a huge loss.
“It’s a really big take for us as mōrehu and we are in a state of shock ae mōrehu of Te Hāhi Rātana but also for the contribution he has made as our tūmuaki to Te Ao Māori,” she says.
It’s expected the funeral at Rātana Pā will be on Saturday.
