The Death Of The Iraqi Economist, Sinan Al-Shabibi

The Independent/- It was announced today, Saturday in Geneva, the death of the former governor of the Central Bank of Iraq, the economist Sinan Al-Shabibi, according to a statement issued by his family and published by his niece.

Sinan Al-Shabibi was born in Baghdad in 1941, and his father is the well-known Iraqi poet and politician, Muhammad Rida Al-Shabibi.

Al-Shabibi attended the College of Economics and Political Science at the University of Baghdad and graduated in 1966 with a Bachelor’s degree in Economics. He also obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Development and Economics, a Master’s degree in Economics from the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom (1970-1971). He also obtained a PhD in Economics from Bristol University in the United Kingdom in 1975.

Al-Shabibi worked as Head of the Import and Marketing Department in the Iraqi Ministry of Oil (1975-1977) and became Head of the Planning and Coordination Department in the Ministry of Planning (1977-1980).

After the outbreak of the Iran-Iraq war, Al-Shabibi moved to Geneva, Switzerland, where he remained until 2001 and worked as an economist at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development.

He became the first governor of the Central Bank of Iraq after the fall of the previous regime in 2003, where he worked on the introduction of accounting systems, and replaced the pre-2003 currency for the new currency..

He was dismissed by former Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, who accused him of charges related to administrative corruption, so he left Iraq permanently to settle with his family in Geneva, Switzerland.
