If it had not been for the exuberant celebrations of Scotland’s footballers after qualifying for Euro 2020 in a celebrated penalty shoot-out, María Mendiola and her kitsch but catchy hit Yes Sir, I Can Boogie might have been consigned to the dustbin of pop history, along with such other accoutrements of the disco era as flared trousers and glitter balls.

True, the song, which Mendiola recorded with Mayte Mateos as the duo Baccara, went to No 1 in 1977 in Britain and across most of Europe, sold an estimated 16 million copies and reputedly became the bestselling single of all-time by a female group.
