13 Grand Slam Champs Headline US Open Women’s Field

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., July 17, 2019 – The USTA announced that 13 players who have won Grand Slam singles titles in their careers will headline the women’s singles field for the 2019 US Open Tennis Championships, including world No. 1 and reigning French Open champion Ashleigh Barty (AUS), defending US Open champion and world No. 2 Naomi Osaka (JPN), and 23-time Grand Slam champion and world No. 9 Serena Williams (USA).
The field includes six previous US Open singles champions as Osaka and Serena Williams are joined by 2017 US Open champion and world No. 8 Sloane Stephens (USA), two-time US Open champion Venus Williams (USA), 2016 US Open champion Angelique Kerber (GER), and 2006 US Open champion Maria Sharapova (RUS).
Rounding out the top 10 entries are: No. 3 Karolina Pliskova (CZE), the 2016 US Open finalist; No. 4 Simona Halep (ROU), a two-time Grand Slam champion; No. 5 Kiki Bertens (NED); No. 6 Petra Kvitova (CZE), a two-time Wimbledon champion; No. 7 Elina Svitolina (UKR); and No. 10 Aryna Sabalekna (BLR).
Additional Grand Slam champions featured in this year’s field include: two-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka (BLR), two-time Grand Slam champion Garbine Muguruza (ESP), 2018 Australian Open champion Caroline Wozniacki, and 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko (LAT).
The 2019 US Open will be played Monday, August 26, through Sunday, September 8, at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. The US Open Women’s Singles Championship is presented by J.P. Morgan.
Each of the world’s top 102 women received direct entry into the US Open, representing 34 countries. The United States has 15 women who qualified for direct entry into the US Open’s main draw—the most of any country.
Mandy Minella (LUX), ranked No. 102, is the last player accepted directly into the women’s field of 128. Two players are using a special ranking to gain entry into the main draw, including No. 43 CiCi Bellis (USA) and No. 100 Coco Vandweghe (USA). Sixteen more players will gain entry through the US Open Qualifying Tournament, which is the centerpiece of US Open Fan Week, August 19-24, while the remaining eight spots are wild cards awarded by the USTA.
The additional American women who received direct entry into this year’s tournament include: No. 17 Madison Keys, of Orlando, Fla., No. 23 Amanda Anisimova, of Aventura, Fla., No. 27 Sofia Kenin, of Pembroke Pines, Fla., No. 33 Danielle Collins, of St. Petersburg, Fla., No. 37 Alison Riske, of Pittsburgh, No. 71 Lauren Davis, of Gates Mills, Ohio, No. 72 Jennifer Brady, of Orlando, Fla., No. 74 Jessica Pegula, of Buffalo, N.Y., No. 83 Madison Brengle, of Dover, Del., No. 85 Bernarda Pera, of Tenafly, N.J.
The July 15 edition of the WTA rankings was used to determine the US Open main draw entry list. Seeds will be determined and announced closer to the start of the event.
The 2019 US Open will mark the culmination of the US Open Series, the North American summer season of seven ATP World Tour and WTA events that begins next week in Atlanta.
