INDIAN HABOR BEACH, Fla. (AP) - Lori Wilson, a former state senator who championed passage of the Equal Rights Amendment in the battleground state of Florida in the 1970s and 1980s, has died. She was 81.

Florida Today reports Wilson died Wednesday at her daughter’s home in Indian Harbor Beach, Florida after a long illness.

During the 1970s and 1980s, as each state legislature around the country voted to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment, Wilson became Florida’s leading proponent of its passage. The amendment guaranteed equal legal rights for all Americans regardless of sex.

The Florida Senate ultimately failed to pass the measure, and the Equal Rights Amendment was short of the 38 states needed for its ratification.

Wilson’s second husband was Al Neuharth, the founder of USA Today.
