What Causes Cavities?

You may commonly associate cavities with eating too much candy and sweets, but that’s just one of the few ways you can get them! What exactly are cavities, and how can you avoid getting any?

What Are Cavities?

Cavities are small pockets of decay that form on the surface of your teeth. You may sometimes see these tiny dark holes on your teeth; however, they typically must be detected by a dental professional. Cavities can be accompanied by persistent bad breath, a strange taste in your mouth, and increased tooth pain and sensitivity.

What Causes Cavities?

Plaque and bacteria overgrowth is the main cause of cavities. Lack of proper brushing and flossing make it easier for bacteria to thrive on your teeth, so it’s imperative to do both every day. Moreover, bacteria release damaging acids when they feed on sugar and starch in your mouth, so you are likely to develop cavities if you consume sugary or acidic foods without properly brushing and flossing them away. Smoking, certain medications, dry mouth, and some medical conditions, such as diabetes, can also lead to increased tooth decay risk.

How Do I Make My Cavities Go Away?

Your cavities require treatment by your dentist. However, cavities are easily treatable with fillings and require virtually no down time after the procedure is over. Dr. Razmjou will gently numb the area around the tooth, flush out any areas of decay, and then fill the hole with a tooth-like resin or porcelain that you’ll never even notice is there. Your smile will be healthy and back to normal in no time!

How Do I Prevent Future Cavities?

  • Brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes each time
  • Wait at least 30-60 minutes after meals before brushing to allow your enamel time to settle and re-harden
  • Use toothpaste that contains fluoride
  • Floss your teeth at least once a day
  • Rinse your mouth once a day with a therapeutic mouthwash
  • Eat a healthy, balanced diet that will promote healthy teeth
  • Drink plenty of water, especially during and after meals
  • Avoid or quit smoking
  • Visit us every six months so that Dr. Razmjou can treat any existing tooth decay in the earliest stages possible
