Taking Care of Your Mouth on Vacation

It’s that time of year—time for your winter vacation! But wait, what’s that nagging feeling? Did you forget something? Ah, yes, you forgot to stick to a dental routine while you were gone. And now you’ve returned home with the beginnings of a few cavities that could have easily been avoided.

But this doesn’t have to be your fate. Here are some tips to help you take care of your mouth while you’re on vacation.

1. Most importantly, remember to brush your teeth every day. A winter vacation doesn’t mean a vacation from your dental hygiene!

2. Don’t celebrate your break by skipping your nightly flossing, either. You may not love flossing, but it’s incredibly important in keeping your plaque in check. Throw a few flosser picks in your bag to make sure you’re never caught without floss.

3. Keep a travel-size toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, and mouthwash on you at all times. Buying travel-size dental items will help you remember to take care of your teeth every day, plus they’re easy to carry.

4. Stick to a routine. Whether this means coming back to your hotel a few minutes early every night, or going to bed a few minutes later, make sure that you pick a plan and stick to it.

5. If you’ve been experiencing any dental problems, make sure to see your dentist before you go on vacation. This way you can head out with a clean bill of health, and you won’t be running around trying to find a dentist on vacation.

6. That said, just in case, make sure you know the location of the closest local dentist. Better safe than sorry!

7. Eat healthy to keep your mouth happy! Usually when we go on vacation our diets go out the window. But don’t go too crazy, because that can have negative repercussion for your dental health. Make sure to eat fruits, veggies, and whole grains.

8. Stay hydrated. Drinking lots of water will not only improve your overall health, but consuming lots of liquid will also help keep your mouth moist and flush away sugary particles that can cause cavities.

9. On the off-chance that you are truly unable to brush your teeth one night, pack some sugarless gum to chew in the meantime.

Remember, make it easy for yourself! The simpler and more streamlined your vacation dental routine is, the more likely you’ll stick to it. If you have questions about your dental health, contact Arlington Dental Center to speak to our knowledgeable team.
