More building along the Blue Line

Add another development to the busy, busy Blue Line route—this time on a 3.29-acre plot along McClellan Highway in Eastie.

Gate Residential, the same folks behind Quincy Center’s big-time West of Chestnut, have filed plans with Boston to turn what’s now a rental-car lot into a 300-unit apartment complex complete with 2,000 square feet of ground-floor commercial space and on-site parking.

The thinking is that the complex at 175 McClellan Highway could be folded into East Boston’s nearby Orient Heights section, including its Blue Line stop about 15 minutes away.

Things are pretty fluid right now—Gate plans to file more detailed plans in September, per the Globe’s Tim Logan—but such a project would be the latest proposal or plan for the vicinity. The redevelopment of the nearby Suffolk Downs race track is poised to become one of Boston’s biggest new developments, period.

Gate wants to break ground at 175 McClellan in 2018. Stay tuned.
