Construction crews will move into the area at the end of June to begin work align the intersection of Oak, Christina and Needham Streets. The construction itself is set to last approximately 12 weeks, the TAB’s Laura Lovett reports.
Oak and Christina Streets to be aligned this summer

Great news.
Once again… It’s incredibly shortsighted to be doing all this road work along the Needham Street corridor without under-grounding the utilities. This is literally a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. If the State refuses to do this job properly, the City of Newton should use a special assessment on Needham Street commercial properties to fund the under-grounding of utilities.
This is great news. When I was a kid I used to deliver the Newton Graphic(from a bike, not a car, oh the humanity!!!)
and Upland Avenue was on my route. In those years, the top of Upland Ave was open at the top to allow access to Rachel Rd and Winchester St. Upland Ave needs to be reopened as it was years ago. Absolutely no reason why it shouldn’t be once again.
Some thoughts and questions …. I’m seeing in the Tab that work is going to occur on the Needham Ave corridor starting in Needham, all the way up to route 9. Work starts summer 2019 and will go for over 3 years (!!! YIKES !!!). Also includes work on the bridge right there. Is this alignment work for Christina and Oak going to occur before that major project? Looks like it is. I’m hoping
1) No rework is needed
2) That the disruption to traffic is is minimal. Would stink if big disruption occurs for this project and then again for the next one.
Is there good rationale for not getting it all done at once?
And the idea above regarding burying electric — great idea – hoping that is part of the 3.5 year project!
