'Father of Robotics' Joseph Engelberger Dies in Newtown

Engelberger created the world's first industrial robot.

Joseph Engelberger, known as the “Father of Robotics” died peacefully at his home in Newtown at the age of 90 on Dec. 1

Engelberger was the creator of the world’s first industrial robot and is credited with revolutionizing modern manufacturing processes.

He founded Unimation in 1956, which what on to install the first industrial robot in a General Motors plant in 1961, according to the Robotic Industries Association.

“Joe made some of the most important contributions to technological advancement in the history of the world,” said Jeff Burnstein, President of the Robotic Industries Association. “Because of Joe, robotics became a global industry. He was years ahead of his time, envisioning robots based on insects and birds decades ago –– developments that we’re finally seeing today.”

Engelberger switched focus to robotics in human services and developed HelpMate, a robot hospital courier.

“Joe was the Henry Ford for the robotics business and a tremendous international ambassador,” said Don Vincent, past RIA President. “It was Joe’s personal drive and commitment to make forming Robotics Industries Association a reality along with his pioneering talents that convinced his competitors that RIA was needed for the future of manufacturing.”
