I cannot express to you all how excited I am about spring finally getting here. Sure, the nicer weather and the promise of summer around the bend is surrounded by the abject horror that’s going on in the U.S. right now and we’ll all soon be fighting each other for resources… But for now, the good thing is better weather and brand new metal music to play loud as fuck in my car with the windows finally rolled down.
Allegaeon
The Ossuary Lens (Metal Blade Records)
Having been around for 17 years now, you should pretty much know what you’re getting from Allegaeon by this point. So if you’re looking for heavy-hitting death metal that sounds huge, can beat you over the head with technical precision, and sometimes melt your face off, this is the new release for you.
Bleed From Within
Zenith (Nuclear Blast)
In my opinion, this is the big release of the week. Rather than drag on and on about how exciting this one really is, you can check out our review. Spoilers: it got a damn good score and our reviewer Jordan Blum said Zenith “falls easily among Bleed From Within’s top albums.” So yeah. It’s pretty good.
Lo-Pan
Get Well Soon (Magnetic Eye Records)
You thought I’d go a week without highlighting some killer stoner metal/rock, didn’t you? You better pass what you’re smokin’, because Lo-Pan’s Get Well Soon not only does the whole stoner metal thing well, but it also experiments just a smidge with proggy segments and a little spaced-out rock grooves. But at its heart, this record remains a down and dirty stoner metal release at heart.
Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs
Death Hilarious (Missing Piece Records)
A pure sludge metal record that dares to take some detours along its 45 minute runtime, Death Hilarious maintains the band’s use of fuzzed out guitars and Black Sabbath worship while taking a more aggressive stance at times. It’s intense and weird, but the stand out track has to be “Glib Tongued,” which features a special collab with Run The Jewels’ El-P. That shit is wild.
Scowl
Are We All Angels (Dead Oceans)
Catchy yet kinda punky at the same time, Scowl’s new offering feels familiar and exciting at times. I’ve gone on record before saying that some of the tracks on this one sound as if “if there were a new Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater game coming out in 2025, it would definitely be on the soundtrack.” I still stand by that assessment and expect people to either love or hate this one. Either way, it’s definitely worth checking out.
