Video. Hanami celebrations begin in Tokyo as cherry blossoms reach their peak

As cherry blossoms near their peak, Tokyo’s parks buzz with locals and tourists enjoying ‘hanami’ picnics, celebrating the season’s arrival ahead of this weekend’s full bloom.

Tourists and locals flocked to Tokyo's popular spots on Friday to admire Japan's iconic cherry blossoms, as the delicate pink flowers neared full bloom.

Many laid out picnic mats for "hanami" parties under the trees.

The Meteorological Agency confirmed the blossoms' first bloom on Monday, marking the official start of the season.

Cherry blossoms, or “sakura,” usually reach their peak in late March to early April, just as the country celebrates the start of the new school and business year.
