House gutted near Ambur; couple escapes unhurt

A couple and his wife escaped unhurt after a fire broke out in a house at Periyavarigam village near Ambur town in Tirupattur on Thursday.

Police said that at 10.40 a.m, K. Kuppan, 52, noticed thick smoke coming from one of the rooms in his house. e and his wife K. Janani rushed out of the house.

Based on an alert, a 12-member fire fighting team from Ambur rushed to the spot. Before they could reach the spot, the fire had spread to other rooms in the house, gutting it completely.

Residents complained of severe eye irritation especially among children and senior citizens due to smoke from the house. A case was registered by Ambur Town police. Police said an electrical short circuit from the main electrical board inside the house might be the reason for the incident. A probe is underway.
