Leaders of the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) on Friday (December 27) organised protests across Andhra Pradesh against the ‘steep hikes’ in electricity charges.

They accused Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu of failing to honour his electoral promises. The protests were staged after the government imposed a burden of ₹15,485.36 crore on domestic consumers, contradicting its promise of not increasing the power bills, the YSRCP leaders said.

YSRCP leaders from across the State took out rallies, demanding immediate rollback of the hike on electricity charges.

In Vizianagaram district, assembly constituency in-charge Rajesh, along with Zilla Parishad vice-chairperson S. Jagan Mohan Rao led a rally that culminated at the Electrical A.D.E. office. The protestors submitted a memorandum, demanding corrective action.

In Visakhapatnam South Assembly constituency, former MLA Vasupalli Ganesh Kumar led a protest rally with YSRCP leader Konda Rajiv Gandhi and others, while Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema district saw constituency in-charge Vipparti Venugopala Rao leading a rally, highlighting the ‘undue burden’ on the power consumers.

“The people’s voice cannot be ignored. This unjust burden must be lifted immediately,” said YSRCP leader Bhumana Karunakar Reddy.

Darsi MLA B. Siva Prasad Reddy said it was the ‘government’s duty to protect the poor from rising costs’, while former Minister Ambati Rambabu accused the NDA government of ‘betraying the people of the State’.

Participating in a protest in Vijayawada, YSRCP leader Devineni Avinash emphasised the ‘unwavering resolve of his party to stand by the people’, while Kurasala Kannababu, Dadisetti Raja and Venugopal Rao reiterated that the protests would continue until the demands were conceded.
