Rajkot Fire Highlights: A massive fire broke out at an indoor game zone in Gujarat’s Rajkot city late Saturday, the death toll stands at 28 with about nine people injured. The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh to families of those who died in the incident and Rs 50,000 to those injured.  Earlier in the day, the Gujarat government also announced compensation of Rs 4 lakh to victims’ families. Reacting to the mishap on Saturday, PM Modi said he was “extremely distressed” and that he was in touch with CM Bhupendra Patel regarding the rescue operation efforts.

Meanwhile, a special bench of the Gujarat High Court on Sunday took suo motu cognisance of the fire incident and termed it a “man made disaster”. An FIR was registered against six persons, including TRP amusement park’s owner and manager for culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Meanwhile, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the incident will submit a primary report in 3 days followed by a final report after 10 days.

Rajkot Fire Live Updates: 2 Gujarat cops, civic staff suspended for negligence

On Monday, the Gujarat government suspended seven officials, including two police inspectors and civic staff, due to negligence linked to a fire at the Rajkot game zone that resulted in 27 deaths. The suspended officials were blamed for allowing the facility to operate without necessary approvals, specifically a fire NOC (no objection certificate). The game zone had submitted proof of fire safety equipment, but the NOC was still being processed.

The suspension followed Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel's inspection of the site and his directive for strict action against those responsible. The suspended individuals include Rajkot Municipal Corporation's assistant engineer Jaideep Chaudhary, assistant town planner Gautam Joshi, deputy executive engineer MR Suma from the Roads and Buildings department, and police inspectors VR Patel and NI Rathod.

The fire occurred at the TRP game zone in Nana-Mava locality, killing 27 people, including children. The police have arrested two individuals and registered an FIR against six partners of the game zone and another accused for various charges, including culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The Gujarat High Court called the tragedy a 'man-made disaster' due to the storage of highly inflammable materials at the facility. The state government has formed a Special Investigation Team and announced an ex gratia of Rs 4 lakh to each deceased's kin, with the central government adding an additional Rs 2 lakh per deceased person. No fire clearance: Rajkot game zone kept flying under radar for 3 years

The game zone in Rajkot, where a massive fire left at least 28 people dead on Saturday evening, kept flying under the radar of the fire department of the Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) for three years. The indoor gaming zone was developed in a temporary structure and even had police approval, The Indian Express has learnt.

Rajkot Police Commissioner Raju Bhargava on Sunday said that the TRP Game Zone began operating in 2021, expanded in 2023 and further expansion was ongoing when it caught fire on Saturday evening. Officials had earlier confirmed on Saturday that the facility did not have a fire clearance.

“Technically, a shed falls in the category of temporary structure and such structures, as per existing rules, don’t require a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the fire department. Therefore, our fire department couldn’t take any action proactively. On the other hand, the proprietors of the gaming zone didn’t apply for a fire NOC; and therefore, officers of the fire department did not have an occasion to visit the facility for inspection,” a senior functionary of the BJP-ruled RMC told The Indian Express. Rajkot Fire Live Updates: What did Gujarat HC say?

"Prima facie, a man-made disaster has occurred where innocent lives of children have been lost" and families have grieved their loss, the Gujarat High Court which took suo motu cognisance of the fire incident said on Sunday.

'We are shocked to read newspaper reports which indicate that the gaming zone at Rajkot appears to have taken advantage of the loopholes in the Gujarat Comprehensive General Development Control Regulations (GDCR). These entertainment zones, as newspapers suggest, have come up without the necessary approvals from the competent authorities,' the court said.

The HC also wanted to know from the state government and the municipal corporations 'whether such licenses, including the licenses to its use and compliance of fire safety regulations' were given to these respective (entertainment) zones that are in territorial jurisdiction of these corporations.

Not just Rajkot, such game zones have come up in Ahmedabad city as well and they 'pose a significant threat to public safety, specially the innocent children,' it said.

At least eight people, including children, were killed in a massive fire that engulfed a private amusement park in Gujarat’s Rajkot on Saturday, officials said. People were also feared trapped inside the park and the death toll may rise even as rescue operations were underway, they said.

The fire broke out at TRP, a private amusement and theme park on Nana Mava Road of the city. “We have recovered eight bodies so far and more are feared trapped inside the park,” Ilesh Kher, chief fire officer of Rajkot told The Indian Express.

“The park was set up under a tin shed and firefighters are facing difficulties in accessing the area,” Kher said. Rajkot district collector said that majority of the victims were children. “A part of the shed has collapsed. The firefighters managed to control the fire but fumes are still emanating from the debris and we fear more people could be trapped under it,” Rajkot district collector Prabhav Joshi told The Indian Express. The collector further said that prima facie, the fire started due to an electric short-circuit. “As the park was set up under a shed, a lot of air-conditioners were mounted there. However, due to the hot weather, the electric wiring might not have been able to handle the load, leading to the short-circuit which could have sparked the fire,” said Joshi.
