A bank manager colleague of a rape-murder victim’s husband is among three people recently arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Karnataka Police in the 11-year-old case that was initially closed by the local police.

The case emerged on February 15, 2013, when a bank employee filed a police complaint stating that his 44-year-old wife, who worked as an executive assistant at a private firm in Bengaluru, had not returned home from work.

The body of the victim was subsequently found in a Nilgiri grove in Muthukadahalli village under Chikkajala police limits. A case of murder was registered after the complainant identified the body as that of his missing wife.

Initially, the local police that investigated the case arrested the husband for the murder. Later, the police filed a final report ‘C’ in the case after concluding that the husband was not involved and that the accused had remained untraced.

Following his discharge from the case, the victim’s husband moved the Karnataka High Court for a fresh investigation of the murder of his wife and the HC ordered a CID probe.

The CID extensively examined eyewitnesses in the case and obtained a clue that a person identified as Deepak Chanappa was involved in the crime.

The investigations from the leads regarding the involvement of Deepak Chanappa led the CID to the branch manager of the Mahalakshmi Layout unit of the bank where the victim’s husband was an employee. The CID probe has found that the bank manager colleague of the victim’s husband and an accomplice, Hariprasad S, “gang-raped and murdered” the victim.

“Technical and scientific evidence has been collected in this case and the charge sheet has been submitted to the competent court against the three accused,” the CID said on Friday.

“This case is very complicated. The local police filed a ‘C’ final report stating that the accused had not been found. Investigators with their intelligence and investigative skills succeeded in finding the accused,” the CID said in an official statement.
