How to Make a Crochet Heart for Beginners (Make a Banner!)

Are you new to the world of crochet and want to make a crochet heart for beginners? In today’s blog post, I’m sharing how to make a heart out of chunky yarn. I’ll also show you how to turn it into an adorable banner that’s perfect to decorate a mantel, a nursery… you name it! Let’s get started.
Years ago, I crocheted an adorable mini hearts banner which I still use to this day. You can find that project here. This year, I thought I’d recreate the banner with extra chunky yarn to give it a whole different look. And you can’t have to many heart banners to decorate with, am I right?! This little banner is pretty quick to whip up (each heart took me about 5 minutes to crochet), and it’s a great beginner’s crochet project. Gauge and tension don’t really matter for this project, so it’s a wonderful way to get started with crochet. It only uses basic stitches… and who doesn’t love a little crochet heart?!
You could use the hearts as-is for sweet decor or coffee coasters, stitch them to a sweet little baby blanket, or string them together for an adorable banner like I did. Use worsted weight yarn, chunky yarn… you can even use random yarn scraps to make hearts of all colours and sizes! There are many crochet heart patterns online, but this method is the one I find the easiest.
Crochet Heart Photo Tutorial for Beginners

Materials You’ll Need
Begin by gathering your supplies:
- yarn (wool, cotton, or polyester)
- crochet hook
- scissors
- yarn needle / tapestry needle
Note: You can use any weight and kind of yarn for these hearts. Then, use the right hook size for the weight of yarn you’re using. Look at the yarn packaging for the hook size suggestion. The amount of hearts you can make will depend on the length of your yarn. I’m using extra chunky roving yarn for my hearts and a size P 16 mm hook
Basic crochet stitches / terms you’ll need to know
Next, let’s learn some basic stitches! Click on the term to learn what it means & how to do it:
- magic loop / magic ring / magic circle
- chain (ch)
- triple crochet (tc)
- double crochet (dc)
- slip stitch (sl st)
Making the Crochet Heart
First, make a magic loop (or “magic ring”).
Then, chain 3.
Next, into the loop:
Triple crochet 2.
Double crochet 3.
Chain 1.
Triple crochet 1.
Chain 1.
Double crochet 3.
Triple crochet 2.
Chain 3.
You should now see the heart shape!
Then, pull yarn end of loop to close magic loop.
Now, slip stitch through center of heart (loop).
Finally, cut the yarn, and pull the ends through to back of heart with a yarn needle or your fingers.
Finish your heart by weaving in the ends into back of heart and trimming any excess yarn. Now, make some more of these easy crochet hearts (they’re so addicting)!
How to make a crochet heart banner
To make a garland, start by making 7 or more crochet hearts. Then, cut a long piece of extra yarn, and pull it from the back to the front through the left top side of one heart. Next, pull it from the front to the back on the right top side of the heart. Repeat until you’ve strung all of the hearts on the yarn. Finally, hang your banner with some hooks and now you can enjoy your handiwork!

What size of hook did you use? In the video you said a P 16. Did you mean a Q (which is 16mm)?
Mine says “P16 – 11.5mm”

Ah man, that banner is to die for, but to be honest what captured my eye was the ‘his’ and ‘hers’ throw pillows.
