Why do we count the Omer?
“Because even in the drudgery of everyday life it is important to remember our farmer Jewish ancestors who took out a long curved knife, got on a bended knee slicing at the base of a ridiculouly cheap barley that barely makes money as a crop, pick it up, and lifted up that dirty hand to God and declared, "Day 21."
Meaning, "Life sucks. But here I am God, still waiting on you for the promise, because you are worth waiting for in all the toil, pain and tears of life."
That is why we count the Omer.
We count our days of perseverance doing the same old same old every year for generations, between the celebrations of the Barley Harvest and the Wheat Harvest (the Wheat Harvest is the one that makes good money).
There is ZERO celebration, no feasting, no fasting, no special songs, no special wine. Just the plodding on day after day of, "day 1, Thanks Lord," "day 3, thanks Lord,"... "Day 10, thanks Lord,".... "Day 38, Thanks Lord, "day 49, Thanks Lord..."
