Nothing worse than oppn's 'hamara tax, hamara money' cry: PM Modi

NEW DLEHI: PM Narendra Modi on Wednesday hit out at the "hamara tax hamara money" argument - that a state should have exclusive access to taxes raised from its jurisdiction, and said "nothing can be worse".
"Have you imagined a situation where a city where vaccines are produced stopped them from being taken out until its entire population has been administered the shots? What kind of thinking is this?" he asked.

"Also, think of a situation of the eastern states where most of our coal is produced, blocking movement of the fuel to other states? Or Himalayan states claiming monopoly over the water of rivers which emerge from their area? What would have happened if eastern states, where most of our oxygen plants are located, had stopped supply of life-saving gas during the pandemic saying that their needs required to be fulfilled first?" he said.
"This nation is not just a piece of land for us. It is like the human body, if there is pain somewhere, the hand doesn't say that the thorn is in the foot and it doesn't concern me... if there is pain anywhere in this country, pain should be felt by everyone. If any part of the country is left without development, then the country cannot become developed. Therefore, we should look at the country as one and not separate parts," he added.
The PM said during Covid, Centre and states had worked together as a team to avert a crisis and helped the country emerge from it. He said having served as chief minister, he understood the challenges and urged states to work in the spirit of cooperative federalism.
"Do we think he is a child from Jharkhand if a young Adivasi child from the state wins a medal in the Olympics? The whole country says he is from our land. When the country sees potential in a child from Jharkhand and spends crores to send him for coaching abroad, will we think we are spending this for Jharkhand? Is it not for the country? What have we started saying, what language are we using?" Modi said.
