An expert said that Dhanteras is the celebration of wealth and the mongoose is associated with Lord Kuber, the deity of wealth and its guardian.
Diwali, the most significant festival in Hinduism, will be celebrated on November 12. This celebration of fervour, joy, and happiness spans five days, starting with Dhanteras. It involves the worship of Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Vishnu and Lord Ganesha to seek blessings of wealth and prosperity. Additionally, on Dhanteras, devotees also worship Kuber, the god of wealth.
According to religious traditions, spotting a mongoose (also called nevala) on Dhanteras is considered highly auspicious. This is associated with the belief that the mongoose symbolises hidden wealth and seeing one, especially in the morning, is a positive sign.

Consequently, spotting Lord Kuber’s vehicle on Dhanteras is inherently auspicious. It is seen as a sign that one is likely to receive wealth and that their luck is about to improve. Observing a mongoose is believed to be akin to encountering Lord Kuber himself.
The presence of a mongoose is considered a symbol of good luck. This creature symbolises attributes like intelligence, agility and wealth. Mongoose are commonly found in fields or grassy areas. They play a role in protecting crops by hunting creatures that can damage farmers’ harvests. As a result, the mongoose is seen as a guardian of crops, and when crop yields are abundant, it can lead to prosperity for the farmers.
Lord Kubera is the deity of Yakshas and holds authority over the northern direction. On Dhanteras, he is venerated in the form of Dhanvantari. Similar to the worship of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha, Lord Kuber is also revered during special festivals.
On Dhanteras, it is a tradition for people to purchase utensils, as well as precious metals like silver and gold. Copper and brass utensils are also commonly bought items on this auspicious day, alongside precious metals.
