High court lets Manipur tribal bodies appeal Meitei ST tag order

The Manipur high court has allowed four tribal organisations to appeal a previous HC order of March 27 this year directing the state government to send a recommendation on ST status for the Meitei community to the Centre. The March order was followed around a month later by the sectarian violence that simmered for months and has so far claimed at least 180 lives. An HC division bench allowed the appeal by the tribal organisations on Thursday “taking into consideration the nature of the grievances”.

Since then, the Supreme Court and the Union home minister have faulted the HC directive, which asked the state to send the recommendation for the Meiteis’ ST tag to the Union tribal affairs ministry.
An HC division bench allowed the appeal by the tribal organisations on Thursday “taking into consideration the nature of the grievances”.
The HC division bench noted that “the main grievance is that they will be prejudicially affected if they are not given a chance to raise objections in the matter of granting ST status to the Meitei community”.
