Teen indicted in death of lacrosse star Sadie Mauro months after Cape Cod boat crash
A 19-year-old man is facing a slew of charges in the death of Massachusetts high school lacrosse star Sadie Mauro who was killed when the boat she was in crashed into a jetty over the summer, prosecutors said Tuesday.
David K. Sullivan, Medfield, Mass., has been accused of drunkenly steering the vessel before it crashed and ejected the rising high school senior in a Cape Cod harbor, according to Cape & Islands District Attorney Robert Galibois.
The Dover-Sherborn High School student went missing in Sesuit Harbor around 9 p.m. on July 21. Her body was later found at a nearby beach 90 minutes after the violent collision.
Two other victims were also seriously injured in the crash, the district attorney’s office said.
Charges against Sullivan include the death of a person caused by operating a vessel/boat under the influence of intoxicating liquor, two counts of operation of a vessel while under the influence of intoxication causing serious bodily injury, and reckless or negligent operation of a vessel causing death.
He is also facing charges of minor in possession of alcohol and possessing false RMW documents.
Sullivan was indicted in the high-profile case Friday after an investigation was opened in August.
“The District Attorney would like to express his deepest condolences to the deceased 17-year-old’s family and loved ones,” the office said in a statement.
Mauro has been remembered as a fierce competitor and caring friend who was looking forward to heading off to Gettysburg College to play for the Division III women’s lacrosse program.
“She would do anything for you. She would run through a wall for you if you asked her to. She was just so coachable, loved lacrosse, loved his team,” high school athletic director Emily Sullivan told CBS Boston.
“Sadie’s smile could light up a room, she had a heart of gold and the sweetest spirit,” Dover-Sherborn High School Principal John Smith said in a previous letter to the community following Mauro’s death.
