Every team in the NFL has star players, beyond just the quarterback position, who are invaluable to their success.

This is true for the Las Vegas Raiders, who, while winning only six games last season, won those games largely due in part to their star running back, Josh Jacobs.

Jacobs led the NFL in rushing last season and was named a First-Team All-Pro and a Pro Bowler. He has been away from the team due to the lack of progressing contract extension talks.

CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin recently released an article listing one non-quarterback each NFL team can’t afford to lose in 2023, and named Jacobs that player for the Raiders.

On Jacobs, Benjamin writes:

“You can see why Jacobs is holding out for financial security. Davante Adams may play a more important position, but with Jakobi Meyers and Hunter Renfrow out wide, Las Vegas can at least get by with WR reserves. Jacobs’ power was their offense in 2022.”

Jacobs’ situation is an interesting one. His value to the Raiders is clear, but there is hesitancy to pay him a long-term contract due to the position he plays. The value of running backs has decreased gradually over the last couple of years, and it might be hurting Jacobs’ chances of getting a multi-year deal.

Jacobs sent out a tweet on Tuesday that caught the attention of many. The tweet said just two words: “Bad business.” It’s unclear what the tweet exactly means, but fans speculated that it might have something to do with Jacobs’ contract situation.

Jacobs is not the only running back who has dealt with contract complications this offseason. New York Giants star running back Saquon Barkley also has not received a long-term contract from the team, and running back Dalvin Cook was recently released by the Minnesota Vikings in a money-saving move, even after being named to a fourth straight Pro Bowl.

It’s unclear what the Raiders would look like without Jacobs, but he has been a crucial part of their offensive success over the last four seasons. He is an important player at what is turning into an unimportant position, which further complicates his future with the Raiders.
