IIT-BHU showcases efforts in healthcare and AI
Varanasi: The Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) displayed its efforts in the areas of healthcare, biomaterials and artificial intelligence at the third G20 Health Working Group (HWG) meeting held at Hyderabad International Convention Centre (HICC) in Hyderabad from June 4 to 6.
IIT (BHU) showcased myoelectric prosthetic hand, nickel-free stainless steel for orthopaedic implants, bioengineered dual fluorescent carbon nanodots and transgelosome for melanoma cancer therapy in the exhibition on "strengthening global collaboration on research and development in medical countermeasures (vaccines, therapeutics, and diagnostics (VTDs).” Institute director prof Pramod Kumar Jain said: “Healthcare, advanced materials, artificial intelligence, and biomedical technology development in the related areas are among the major thrust areas of our institute.

This impeccably aligns with the discerning healthcare initiatives of the Government of India like PM Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission besides becoming a key contributor to realizing the vision of Digital India, Innovate in India and Make in India.”
He added that “In addition to striving for excellence in academics, I strongly believe that IIT-BHU has a lot of potentials to play a crucial role in this multi-institutional and international partnership in the healthcare sector with the overarching objective to establish R&D in the medical counter measures (MCMs). Forging new alliances and engaging in inter- and cross-disciplinary technological advancement to solve key societal problems is in our DNA and hence we are looking forward to interacting with the top functionaries in this G20 event from member countries, invites, and international organisations in showcasing our institute’s efforts and building productive collaborations.”
“We’re thankful to the Ministry of Education, the Confederation of Indian Industry, and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare for inviting us to showcase our R&D efforts in therapeutics, vaccines, and diagnostics during G-20 Health Working Group Meeting. I am confident that such mega events will open up newer horizons and opportunities in the development of critical and emerging technologies in the healthcare sector” Jain said.
Dean (Research and Development) of the institute prof Vikash Kumar Dubey said: “Health and Family Welfare’ is one of our key verticals under I-DAPT supported by technology innovation hub (TIH) under India's National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical System funded Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India.”
“IIT-BHU has organised various hackathons to empower future generations to learn and to think analytically about the pressing problems in the society in the area of healthcare,” said Dubey.
The G20 HWG meeting focussed on priorities, including health emergencies prevention, preparedness, and response, access, and availability of affordable medical countermeasures, and digital health. The meeting aims to voice the challenges of the Global South and discuss the solutions. Representatives of 180-member countries, 10 invitees and 22 international organisations attended the meet.
