PRAYAGRAJ: The chief judicial magistrate, Prayagraj, on Thursday sent gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf to 14-day judicial custody and also allowed a five-day police remand for both of them in connection with the Umesh Pal murder case. The police remand will begin from April 13 and will continue till April 17. The judicial custody will continue till April 26.

In his application seeking 14-day police custody, Dhoomanganj station house officer Rajesh Kumar Maurya, who is also the investigation officer of Umesh murder ca se, said to obtain the necessary information regarding the weapons used and obtained, their police custody remand was necessary.
Maurya said that Atiq and Ashraf, had confessed that they obtained sophistic ated weapons from a person who used to procure them from the Pakistan border in Punjab, where they were a llegedly dropped by drones. They said they could not disclose the exact loca tion and the person concerned but i f they were taken to that place, they could identify the place and the arms supplier.
On Thursday, both Atiq and Ashraf were produced before CJM Din esh Gautam at 11. 10am amid heavy security.
