HC junks PIL seeking ban on non-medical circumcisions
KOCHI: The Kerala high court has dismissed a PIL seeking a ban on the practice of circumcision for non-medical reasons, saying contentions made just on the basis of media reports were not maintainable.
"Giving due consideration to the material on record, we are of the view that the petitioners have not substantiated their case. The court is not a law-making body," the division bench of Chief Justice S Manikumar and Justice Murali Purushothaman said.

Kollam-based organisation Non-Religious Citizens had filed the PIL, contending that non-therapeutic circumcision was illegal and tantamount to violating the rights of children subjected to it. Circumcision causes psychological trauma in children, including "disrupted attachment, cognitive delays, and impaired emotional regulation", the petition argued, requesting the court to give children the right to decide whether to follow such a religious practice on reaching the age of consent.
The PIL sought a directive or judicial advice to the Union and state governments to bring legislation prohibiting non-therapeutic circumcision.
