Stella McCartney, a pioneer in sustainable fashion, has recently revealed an incredible innovation – the world’s first garment made from plastic-free, plant-based sequins. This groundbreaking Biosequin® jumpsuit, modeled by Cara Delevingne, graced the cover of American Vogue, capturing attention and admiration worldwide. Although not yet available for purchase, this dazzling creation highlights the potential of eco-friendly materials in the fashion industry.

These unique Biosequins are the brainchild of Radiant Matter, a company specializing in color and material solutions for the circular economy. Made from plant-derived cellulose, Biosequins are fully biodegradable and free from plastics, metals, minerals, and synthetic pigments. In contrast, traditional sequins are typically crafted from environmentally harmful synthetic materials like PVC or polyester film, which may also have negative effects on human health.

Stella McCartney’s eponymous fashion house has been at the forefront of sustainable fashion for years. In 2021, they introduced an updated version of their classic Eclypse sneakers made entirely from recycled and plant-derived materials. The brand also made history by launching the first-ever commercial bag made with Mylo, a mycelium-based leather alternative developed by Bolt Threads. A fresh white edition of this innovative bag was recently showcased at Paris Fashion Week. Ultimately, Stella McCartney aims to exclusively use recycled, recyclable, and biobased materials in their creations.

In a statement, Stella McCartney expressed her delight with the BioSequin all-in-one jumpsuit, stating, “I am amazed by the iridescent beauty of our BioSequin all-in-one – handcrafted in my London atelier from plant-derived, non-toxic sequins that are even more stunning than conventional options. Who says sustainability can’t be sexy? Cara is breathtaking in this rare, precious garment and I am so grateful that Vogue has given us the platform to share it and inspire others to see the potential of a more conscious future of fashion.”

Stella McCartney’s innovative Biosequin jumpsuit is a testament to the future of sustainable fashion, proving that environmentally conscious materials can be both beautiful and sexy. This iconic design is a call to action for the fashion industry to embrace sustainability and create a more eco-friendly future.
