Huntley Man Dies Following Head-on Crash on Allen Road in Kane County

Kane County Sheriff’s Deputies, Hampshire police, and the Hampshire Fire Protection District responded about 9:06 a.m. Sunday, March 5, 2023, to a report of a head-on crash in the block of 45W100 Allen Road. The two-vehicle crash involved a Ford F-150 pickup truck and a Toyota Prius. The driver of the Prius was transported via Life Net helicopter to Level 1 Trauma Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with critical, life-threatening injuries, where he was later pronounced deceased in the emergency room. The Lake County Coroner’s Office was notified at that time.

The deceased has been identified as 80-year-old William Granias of Huntley. On Monday, March 6, 2023, an autopsy was completed at the Lake County Coroner’s Office. Preliminary results indicate that Mr. Granias died from Blunt Force Injuries as a result of the crash.

The Hampshire Fire Protection District responded to the two vehicle crash. The crash caused heavy damage to both vehicles. One vehicle was on its side. There was entrapment in both vehicles. William Granias was extricated and flown out by LifeNet Helicopter with critical injuries. Another patient was extricated and was treated at the scene, a third patient was also treated at the scene, according to the Hampshire Fire Protection District.

Firefighters and paramedics from Pingree Grove and Burlington Fire Protection Districts were assigned to the scene for mutual aid. The Genoa – Kingston Fire and Rescue provided standby coverage for the Hampshire Fire Protection District.

The incident remains under investigation by the Kane County Sheriff’s Office Investigations Division and Lake County Coroner’s Office. Allen Road is two-lane rural highway with a curve nearby the crash scene, and no Speed Limit signs posted in September 2021, according to Google Maps Street View images captured in September 2021. The crash occurred on Allen Road west of Ketchum Road near Prairie Farm Drive. The crash scene was located southeast of Hampshire in an unincorporated area of Hampshire Township.
