Warning: SPOILERS lie ahead for The Last of Us episode 8!After suffering plenty of trauma, Joel and Ellie's journey is finally bringing them to the Fireflies in The Last of Us episode 9 trailer. The most recent episode of the hit HBO series saw Ellie have to venture out on her own and find supplies for her and a near-death Joel, during which she encountered a group of cannibals led by deranged preacher David. After a brutal showdown between the group leader and young protagonist, Ellie and Joel were finally reunited to continue their cross-country trek.

While audiences are still reeling from their emotional reunion, HBO has released The Last of Us episode 9 trailer.

The video, as seen above, teases Joel and Ellie's journey finally coming to an end as they reach the Fireflies camp in the hopes of utilizing the latter's immunity to develop a cure for the Cordyceps. However, things may seem a little more dire than was originally promised to the two.

Everything The Last Of Us Trailer Reveals About Episode 9

Pedro Pascal in The Last of Us

The most recent leg of Joel and Ellie's journey in The Last of Us proved to have been one of their most emotional yet as Pedro Pascal's grizzled smuggler finally embraced Bella Ramsey's Ellie as his adoptive daughter, while she came face-to-face with the dangers of humanity present before the fall of the world. The Last of Us episode 9 trailer looks to see their bond deepening even further as they finally reach the Fireflies base in Salt Lake City.

The question remains, however, whether the Fireflies will actually be there or if they can be trusted to have actually figured out how to develop a vaccine based on Ellie's blood. Joel and Ellie's last stop at a supposed Fireflies base in Colorado led to the former's near-death attack, and with The Last of Us episode 9 trailer showing them having a flashbang grenade thrown their way and Joel engaging in a firefight, they may find themselves again pitted against an unwanted foe.

The other major takeaway from The Last of Us episode 9 trailer is the confirmation that original Ellie actor Ashley Johnson will finally be appearing as Ellie's mom Anna. Series co-creator Neil Druckmann originally intended to include her in the game, only to run out of time, and while previous footage indicated her time in the episode would be for Ellie's birth, it looks like she will have an encounter with the Infected, which could help explain Ellie's immunity. Only time will tell when The Last of Us season 1 finale airs next Sunday on HBO and HBO Max.
