Mayor Eric Adams has once again proclaimed MeatOut Day in New York City, following the success of last year’s event. On March 20, 2023, the day will encourage all of New York City’s 8.8 million residents to try plant-based meals and raise awareness of the benefits of a plant-based diet. The Farm Animal rights Movement (FARM) initiated MeatOut Day in 1985, promoting the health benefits of a plant-based diet and raising awareness of the environment’s and farmed animals’ welfare.

The proclamation comes as New York City continues to rank highly for its vegan and plant-based options, with an increasing number of restaurants serving plant-based alternatives. P.S. Kitchen, located at 246 W 48th Street, is hosting a special MeatOut event on March 20th, and other MeatOut events are planned throughout the city.

Mayor Adams is a strong advocate for plant-based diets, and his efforts towards a plant-based future align with FARM’s mission. In his book “Healthy at Last,” the Mayor shared his personal journey of changing his diet to improve his health. “As someone who was born in Queens, I am proud of this proclamation,” said Eric C Lindstrom, Executive Director of FARM. “Let’s take animals off our plates.”

FARM is a national nonprofit organization working to end the use of animals for food through public education and grassroots activism. The organization believes in the inherent self-worth of animals, environmental protection, and enhanced public health. FARM operates out of Washington, DC, and New York and works through a volunteer network in all 50 U.S. states and two dozen other countries.

As Mayor Adams proclaims MeatOut Day for the second year in a row, it’s an excellent opportunity to try plant-based meals and learn more about the health benefits of reducing our meat consumption. We can all take part in making a positive impact on the environment and the welfare of animals. So why not challenge yourself and join the movement towards a plant-based future this MeatOut Day?

There are numerous benefits to adopting a plant-based diet, not just for individual health but for the environment and animal welfare as well. Plant-based diets are typically high in fiber, vitamins, and minerals, and can help reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer. They are also typically lower in saturated fat and cholesterol than diets that include meat and dairy products, which can help maintain healthy cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of heart disease. Furthermore, plant-based diets have a lower carbon footprint and require less land and water than animal-based diets, making them a more sustainable option for the planet. Additionally, adopting a plant-based diet can help reduce the suffering of animals raised for food and contribute to a more ethical food system.
