Tesla, the leading player in the electric vehicle (EV) market, has made a significant concession in the move towards a more expansive and cohesive network of EV charging stations across the U.S. On Wednesday, the Biden administration announced that the company had agreed to open a part of its proprietary “supercharger” network to non-Tesla EVs.

The announcement came as part of the effort to expand the country’s network of 500,000 EV chargers, which will cost $7.5 billion from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. Tesla’s concession means it can obtain federal funding for 7,500 chargers, which it plans to open up to non-Tesla vehicles by the end of 2024, with the requirement that the chargers have adapter connections to accommodate any EV. The move is a significant boost for the EV industry and the wider push towards a more sustainable future.

The government’s efforts to build out the EV charging network include partnerships between major automakers and charging station providers, with Ford, Mercedes, and Volvo supporting the initiative through direct investment or partnerships. GM has partnered with charging station company FLO to construct up to 40,000 Level 2 chargers, while Hertz and BP have struck a deal to build out charging stations at Hertz locations in major cities. The White House says that as a result of the announced plans, some 100,000 public chargers will begin to be added across the country, beginning as soon as 2024.

The expansion of the EV charging network is critical to ensuring that EV drivers can travel across the country and easily find a reliable charging station. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg emphasized that ease of use is a top priority for the construction of the charging network, saying, “No matter what EV you drive, we want to make sure that you will be able to plug in [knowing] the price that you’re going to be paying and charge up with a predictable and user-friendly experience.” The federal funds will also be backed by a “build America, buy America” requirement for EV chargers, which mandates that the final assembly of the chargers takes place within the U.S. by July of next year and that 55 percent of component costs are sourced domestically.

The Biden administration has set ambitious goals for the EV industry, including the aim for EVs to make up 50 percent of all vehicle sales in the U.S. by 2030 and to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. By investing in EV infrastructure and making it accessible to all, the government is making it easier for consumers to make the switch to electric and helping to accelerate the shift to a cleaner future.
