Plastic Pollution is a growing problem in Nigeria, but one artist is taking a stand and using discarded flip-flops to create beautiful, colorful portraits. Eugene Komboye, a Nigerian artist based in the city of Abeokuta, is on a mission to help clean up the environment and raise awareness about the impact of plastic waste.

Komboye’s journey as an artist started as an assignment in college back in 2017. Today, his studio is a hub of creativity and training, with aspiring artists learning from the master himself, and turning plastic waste into stunning portraits. Nigeria produces at least 2.5 million tonnes of plastic waste annually, and Komboye sources most of his materials from dump sites, landfills, and river banks. But, before he gets to work, he makes sure to disinfect and wash his findings, ensuring that his portraits are not only beautiful but safe too.

Flip-flops are the most popular type of footwear in Nigeria, and Komboye is using this to his advantage, turning something often considered as waste into something truly valuable. The artist uses his skills to create faces on each flip-flop, transforming them into portraits that are not only unique but also meaningful. Some of his customers even bring in photographs, which he uses to create a personalized portrait, capturing their memories and personalities in a truly special way.

At a time when plastic pollution is having a devastating impact on the planet, Komboye’s portraits are not just works of art, but a symbol of hope. They show that it’s possible to create something beautiful and meaningful from something that was once considered waste and inspire others to follow in his footsteps. Komboye’s studio is not only helping to clean up the environment, but it’s also providing a platform for aspiring artists to hone their skills and bring their own creative visions to life. The future of the planet depends on all of us doing our part, and artists like Komboye are leading the way, inspiring others to take action and make a difference.

So, what can you do to help? Take a look at the plastic in your own life, and think about how you can reduce, reuse, and recycle. Support artists like Komboye by buying their work, or by creating your own eco-friendly creations. The future of our planet is in our hands, and it’s up to us to make sure that it’s a bright one. So, let’s take action today, and create a better tomorrow for us all.
