Police, firefighters, and paramedics from Wheeling responded about 9:32 p.m. Thursday, February 2, 2023 to a report of pedestrian hit by a vehicle on Wolf Road near Manchester Drive in Wheeling.

Police, firefighters, and paramedics on arrival discovered a female pedestrian deceased at the scene just south of Manchester Drive. Police discovered that the pedestrian was hit by two vehicles.

According to the Wheeling Police Department, two vehicles were driven northbound on Wolf Road when they hit a 53 year-old woman who had entered the roadway as a pedestrian. Both vehicles hit the woman, apparently in the northbound lane of Wolf Road. There is one northbound lane and one southbound lane just south of Manchester Drive, which exists only east of Wolf Road. A private driveway is located on the west side of Wolf Road, directly across Manchester Drive. Further south of the scene toward Chicago Executive Airport, the roadway is four lanes with two lanes northbound and two lanes southbound, divided by a median marked by paint. Wolf Road continues as a two-lane roadway north of Manchester Drive. There are residential neighborhoods on either side of Wolf Road consisting of single-family homes and apartment buildings. The Speed Limit along Wolf Road is 35 MPH according to Google Street View images captured in 2019.

There are no pedestrian controls where the pedestrian was hit, although there is a sidewalk that reaches the edge of the southeast corner and the northeast corner of Wolf Road and Manchester Drive. There are sidewalks set away from Wolf Road on parkways on both sides of the road. There were road construction improvements and new sidewalks built in the area during the summer of 2022.

The drivers of both vehicles, stayed at the scene, and were fully cooperating with the investigation, according to the Wheeling Police Department. At least one of the vehicles was stopped on eastbound Manchester Drive east of Wolf Road. The vehicle’s windshield was shattered.

Major Case Assistance Team – Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction (MCAT-STAR) personnel were assigned to the scene to assist Wheeling Police Department with the fatal crash investigation. Wolf Road was closed in both directions near the scene during rescue and investigation operations. Road closures were expanded south toward Hintz Road during the MCAT-STAR investigation.
