D.C United manager Wayne Rooney said that his old team Everton never reached out to him regarding their coaching position before hiring Sean Dyche.
Rooney joined Everton's youth academy at nine years old and signed a pro contract with the team at 16.
He played two seasons for the first team before moving to Manchester United, where he reached superstardom before eventually returning to Everton in 2017 for a short spell.
'It's the club I grew up supporting and loving,' he said, according to The Washington Post. 'They are going through a very difficult period in the club's history, and they felt they had to change.

'Sean Dyche is very experienced. It was always going to be an experienced manager.'
Dyche was fired by Burnley last spring after a 10-year spell and just signed a two-and-a-half year contract with Everton in the hopes of hoping the club avoid relegation for the first time since 1954.
The club currently are sitting 19th in the Premier League with only 15 points and recently fired Frank Lampard from his role as manager in an attempt to save the season.
Although Everton are only three points shy of safety they were dealt two additional blows at the transfer deadline as not only did Anthony Gordon depart the club to join Newcastle, but they also were unable to make any signings after several players rejected offers to join.

Rooney's DC United side have also been dealt their fair share of bad luck having finished last season as the worst team in MLS, albeit it was not largely Rooney's fault after taking over towards the end of the season.
DC have already made high profile additions such as former Premier League players Christian Benteke and Mateusz Klich, and there is a chance the team may not be done adding players.
'We are still looking, but with the budget the way it works, we are looking for the right player in the right position,' Rooney said.
Prized winter signing Klich flew to DC and met his new teammates in Washington but needed to return to Europe as the visa process played out. He has continued working out with fitness coaches as he awaits his visa.
Klich is hoping to make his preseason debut next Monday against MLS Cup champion Los Angeles FC at the Coachella Valley Invitational in Indio, Calif., Rooney said.
United will open the Coachella tournament Wednesday with a 90-minute match against Charlotte FC and a 45-minute session against Vancouver.

Winter signing Mateusz Klich is expected to play a major role in chaning DC United's fortunes
