SIPITANG: Uncertainty over the weather prompted a resident of Kg Ranau-Ranau, Boing Labo, 55, to buy a 6.5-foot plastic boat costing RM750 for emergency use.

The area where he lived was low-lying and every time it rained heavily and continuously there would be flash floods up to nine feet and seep into his house.

“The experience of seeing the flood water rise suddenly and rapidly is very scary, that’s why I took the effort to prepare this boat for use in emergencies.

“The distance from my house to a safe high area is about 100 metres and we have to be careful every time it rains continuously,” he said.

In KOTA MARUDU, the district Angkatan Muda Keadilan (PKR Youth) called on all parties to extend help to flood victims here. Its Chief Zaidi Jatil said the victims who are currently placed in temporary flood shelters (PPS) are in need of food and drinks.

“This district is severely affected by floods,” he said. Zaidi, who is also Sabah PKR Youth Chief hoped that the State and Federal Governments would also help the flood victims with Special Cash Assistance of RM1,000  for each KIR.

“We understand that many people are unable to work during this rainy season, which is worsened by floods. People have lost their income and if there is special cash assistance, it can ease the burden of the victims involved,” he said.

Earlier, in a visit to several flood shelters, Zaidi handed out aid such as mineral water, boxed drinks, biscuits and other necessities.
