Police, firefighters and paramedics from Arlington Heights responded about 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 25, 2023 to a crash involving an Arlington Heights Fire Department fire engine at Arlington Heights Road and Golf Road in Arlington Heights.

Arlington Heights Fire Engine 3 was responding to an Activated Fire Alarm at Central Park East Apartments when the driver of a silver SUV failed to yield to the emergency vehicle. Firefighters immediately checked for injuries and found that at least one person couldn’t get out of the vehicle because the driver door was jammed. There was moderate to severe damage on the driver’s side of the SUV, and the person was extricated from the vehicle by 5:04 p.m., and then assessed by paramedics.

All crash victims refused transportation to a hospital. Apparently, at least two people were traveling in the SUV; however, the number of occupants was not confirmed by authorities.

Any damage to the fire engine was apparently minimal. The fire engine remained in service. Mount Prospect Fire Department assisted with the response to the fire alarm at Central Park East Apartments. The alarm was activated by burnt food in an apartment unit, and there was no actual apartment fire.

Arlington Heights fire chiefs responded for supervision and support.

Several motorists were observed behaving badly while passing the emergency scene — for example, speeding while passing the scene, intolerance for lane changes by other motorists that need to move because of lane closures, failure to yield to emergency vehicles, refusal or hindrance to let vehicles get into traffic, lack of awareness of traffic directions by police near the crash scene, lack of awareness of emergency vehicles that are re-positioning, and lack of awareness of pedestrians that were attempting walk off the crash scene to get to the parkway or nearby parking lots.
