piet hein design handcrafts the tensegrity lamp

Piet Hein Hoeksma strikes a harmonious balance between structure, sculpture, and light with his most recent luminous creation, Tensegrity Lamp. Without any concessions to technique nor design, the lamp’s LED bars, ash wood struts, and delicate steel cables work mutually in a constant equilibrium between compression and tension. Achieving this form through an inherent and modular structural logical that defines the tensegrity model in its purest from, the lamp exude a warm glow of light and enhances the space with a modern yet timeless design.

a balance between structure, sculpture, and light

The Tensegrity Lamp takes shape as a diamond form where the stainless steel cable tendons describe an icosahedron. The fixture’s ash wood struts, made of ash wood are capped with 3D printed PLA heads onto which the tension cables are fixed. Due to a unique tensioning system these can be prestressed, and the lamp can be disassembled and packed as small as the struts. An array of cob LED light armatures fit in any spot within the double tension circuit, appearing as an extra layer of struts. With a total of 23 bulbs, the lamp is a dimmable light source of about 4100 lumen at a power of only 50 W.

With its lightness and intricacy, the fixture doesn’t fill up the space but exudes a delicate airy presence to illuminate any void or large entrance hall. Dutch designer Piet Hein Hoeksma crafts the lamps by hand in the Netherlands with custom made dimensions to to suit the needs of the customer.
