Colombian Pop Star Shakira Proves She Is ‘Out Of Your League’ As Video Breaks YouTube Record

Following

The latest music video from Colombian pop star Shakira logged more than 82 million views in a 24-hour period on YouTube last week according to Official World Records – setting a new milestone for the most-watched new Latin song in the history of the video-sharing platform. The video for the four-minute pop song "Out of Your League" is Shakira's first collaboration with Argentinean producer and DJ Bizarrap. It had been seen 126 million times by Monday afternoon.

Shakira has now joined the ranks of Latin performers who have broken YouTube records, including J Balvin, Luis Fonsi, and Daddy Yankee.

The "diss track" as it has been described, features Shakira, 45, ridiculing her former partner Barcelona footballer Gerard Piqué, 35, and his new alleged 23-year-old partner. Sharkia and Piqué, who have two children together, split last year.

Singing The Blues

In the song, Shakira, who has said she is "worth two 22-year-olds," compared Piqué's relationship to swapping a Ferrari for a Renault Twingo and a Rolex for a Casio. She sings "I was out of your league, which is why you're with someone just like you," while she also mentions her dispute with Spanish authorities, who accuse her of failing to pay income tax of €14.5 million ($15.6 million).

"You left me with my mother-in-law as a neighbor, with the press at my door and a debt to the taxman,” another line notes.

Spanish prosecutors have claimed that Shakira and her family lived in Barcelona between 2012 and 2014, and as a result, should have paid tax in Spain on her worldwide income for those years. The Spanish authorities are now seeking an eight-year prison sentence and a fine of more than €23 million if she is convicted. However, the singer has accused Spain's fiscal authorities of waging "a salacious press campaign" against her and insisted she owes them nothing.

The Latin pop star also said that she's confident that she has enough proof to support her case, but that argument hasn't been put to music – at least not yet.

Record Breaking Star

In addition to her new Official World Record for the video, the Colombian singer has set a number of notable Guinness World Records, becoming the first person to reach 100 million likes on Facebook in July 2014, and the most liked (female) person on the social network in April 2021.

"I am honored and humbled about reaching this milestone, because it's one that's purely about connecting with my fans from all parts of the globe," Shakira said in 2014, adding, "Social media and specifically Facebook has helped myself and other artists bridge the gap between the stage and the audience. We've been able to create a conversation, where both artists and fans can share with one another their thoughts, achievements, the most important moments of their lives in photographs and videos, and have a real, ongoing dialogue."

Other accolades for the "Hips Don't Lie" star include the fastest-selling Spanish language album and the most awards won by a female artist at the Billboard Latin Music Awards.

Even as her "Out of Your League" music video has set a new record, Shakira's likely hoping to have a speedy acquittal in her tax fraud case rather than facing a criminal record that could send her to jail until she's well into her 50s.
