The research involved 3,200 participants of various ages among the two generations. Similar research in 2020 revealed that only 25 percent of consumers ate vegan chocolate and that percentage jumped to 64 percent in 2021.

Sofia Popova, EMEA marketing director of Food Manufacturers at Barry Callebaut, said, “Consumers expect every brand to have a plant-based option. That comes from vegans, vegetarians, but also flexitarians and non-vegans.”

Research showed that healthier choices, as well as food allergies, also contributed to this desire for vegan chocolate. However, the main driving factor was a desire to eat more plant-based options.

Research in the UK revealed that consumers believe that there should be more variety in the vegan chocolate that is available. 64 percent of consumers want more plant-based chocolate options with more variety.

All of this research shows just how in-demand vegan chocolate really is, even among those who are not vegan. With the vegan market growing and expanding, it is important that the vegan market for chocolate do the same.

The plant-based food market is booming, and research suggests it could make up 7.7 percent of the global protein market by 2030. With a value of $29.4 billion in 2020, experts suggest that the plant-based foods market could have a value of over $162 billion by the end of the decade.
