Rafiq Nishonov  Soviet-era leader of Uzbekistan dies

Rafiq Nishanovich Nishanov, a prominent diplomat, as well as a statesman and public figure of the Soviet period, died at the age of 96. 

Rafiq Nishonov led Uzbekistan during 1988-89 before taking the post of chairman of the Soviet of Nationalities, the upper house of the Soviet parliament. He was an adviser to Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev weeks after the failed coup in August 1991 that led to the Soviet Union’s disintegration.  

Rafiq Nishonov was born on January 15, 1926. He graduated from the Tashkent Evening Pedagogical Institute and was a candidate in historical sciences. Nishanov has been a member of the CPSU since 1949. 

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov expressed his condolences to the family and friends of the deceased. 

"Rafiq Nishonov has made a great personal contribution to strengthening the position of the country in the international arena. His demanding approach to business, organizational talent and the best human qualities have earned the well—deserved authority of all those who worked with him," - Sergey Lavrov.
