Cook County Sheriff’s Deputies and firefighters and paramedics from North Maine Township Fire Protection District and Des Plaines responded about 4:07 p.m. Thursday, January 5, 2023 to a report of a fully-involved townhouse or apartment fire near Margail Avenue and Noel Street in unincorporated Des Plaines, Maine Township.

Returning from another emergency call that was completed, the North Maine Fire Protection District Battalion Chief discovered a fully-involved apartment fire, just before the early 9-1-1 calls were phoned in to RED Center fire dispatch.

A MABAS Division 3 Box Alarm #1-S-1 was activated to the first alarm level at 4:16 p.m. Firefighters from Arlington Heights, Mount Prospect, Glencoe, Glenview, Lincolnshire-Riverwood, Niles, Park Ridge, Skokie and other departments were assigned to the scene with the box alarm.

The Illinois State Fire Marshal was assigned to the scene at about 4:37 p.m. Apparently the fire started in one unit of the 2-story brick building and spread to both floors.

All firefighters were out of the building at about 4:50 p.m., and command reported that a primary search of the first and second floor was complete and negative by 4:51 p.m.

Command reported at 5:02 p.m. that hand lines and master streams were still flowing and that a partial collapse had occurred at one of the buildings. Firefighters were also checking buildings nearby that may have been exposed to heat and fire. All lines were shut down by about 5:20 p.m.

The MABAS Box Alarm #1-S-1 was struck out by 6:23 p.m.

Red Cross was requested to the scene for displaced residents. Fire investigators also responded to the scene.

A firefighter suffered minor burns, and was transported to a nearby hospital. Initially, there was no report of civilian injuries or casualties, and residents in three of the four units in the building were accounted for. Two units were partially collapsed. One unit of the building that could not be completely searched due to collapse damage was also without confirmation of the status of any occupant or occupants. Firefighters and sheriff’s deputies were investigating to determine the status of any possible occupants in the severely collapsed unit.

At least two dogs were rescued.
