Fungi are some of the most incredible organisms on the planet. They make soil, digest pollutants, and even help make medicine and food for humans.

Over 90 percent of the plants on earth depend on symbiotic fungi, according to the petition. While they are such a big part of life on earth today, we know relatively little about fungi overall, and not much attention or time is paid to their conservation. Luckily, a simple added category could fix that and make sure that fungi are protected.

Scientists have argued that human life only started and evolved because of fungi. The only reason plants even made it out of water 500 million years ago was because of fungi which helped plants by being their root systems until they could develop their own, according to the petition.

Unfortunately, because fungi do not fit perfectly into “flora” or “fauna,” they are overlooked by major Conservation organizations. Fungi do need protection, however, especially from fungicides and fertilizers but also from plowing, deforestation, and climate change. We need to protect and continue to study these amazing organisms!
