For months, Black residents in Kansas City, Missouri, were warning police that there was a potential serial killer on the loose who was targeting Black women. The police refused to listen and reportedly rejected the evidence.

That was until a woman escaped from the actual killer’s basement. She was covered in duct tape and chains, a shock collar, and actively bleeding. The woman ran to a neighbor’s home and revealed to police that the man has held her captive and was torturing and raping her. The woman also claims that he murdered two of her friends.

Even after all of this, the police somehow still are saying that all of the previous reporters were wrong. The police department even claimed that the reports were “completely unfounded…rumors.” Now, even though it has an opportunity to admit to its mistakes and uphold justice, they choose to continue to dismiss and minimize the concerns of the Black residents.

The man in question was thankfully arrested and is in jail while he awaits charges of rape, sexual assault, and kidnapping. Investigative reporters revealed that the man is an unabashed white supremacist and has even posted online saying that he believes in a race war and said that “oppressed is exactly where [Black people] need to be.”

Why didn’t the police listen when residents were trying to tell them that something was happening? If the police had listened, lives could have been saved. Thankfully, the federal government is investigating the Kansas City Police Department for racism and treatment of staff and hiring practices.
