Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) came to the Senate in 2017 and has since risen to national fame for his ability to explain complex issues and summarize them with amusing analogies. In recent days, he made comments about Joe Biden’s energy policy that quickly went viral.
Kennedy, who was re-elected in 2022 with 61% of the vote, appeared on Fox News to comment on the Biden administration’s latest energy “hit.” The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) proposed a new regulation that would replace current venting and flaring requirements, which, it is estimated, would cost the oil and gas industry about $122 million annually.
In this regard, journalist Ainsley Earhardt asked the senator about the obstacles that the federal government places on the energy industry. “How do you feel about that?” she asked at the beginning of the interview. Far from giving a technical answer, Kennedy showed why he is ranked as one of the funniest members of Congress.
“I used to have a beagle named Roger. And Roger was a rascal. About every two weeks, Roger would run off. He’d always come back but about half the time he’d come back dragging roadkill that he would hide under my back porch. President Biden’s energy policy looks like something Roger used to keep under my back porch.”
“It is a fact that America has the greatest economy, strongest economy in all human history; we can’t run it without fossil fuels, not today, not tomorrow. It is also a fact that America can produce every drop of oil and natural gas we need and have extra left over to sell to our friends,” the senator added.
In addition, the Biden administration announced that it would ease sanctions on Venezuela, which would allow Chevron to resume “limited” energy production in the South American country.
Kennedy also took the opportunity to criticize the president for this “wink” to Venezuela and to the “berserk wing of the Democratic party”.
“President Biden has developed a new energy policy and it is this: Instead of producing at a cheaper cost our own oil and gas in America, we’re going to buy oil from foreign countries that hate us — in this case, Venezuela — so those foreign countries will have more money to buy weapons to try to kill us. It’s a moron-athon,” concluded the senator, who has also flirted with a possible gubernatorial run in 2023.
Kennedy for governor?
Just a year after securing six more years in the Senate, Kennedy could get into another, perhaps more competitive, race. Weeks ago, the senator surprised everyone by revealing that he was “seriously considering” entering the race.
“I’ve spent my life and career serving the people of Louisiana. But we can’t deny that our great state is facing serious challenges. To meet those challenges, Louisiana families deserve a governor who can lead our state and help solve our toughest problems,” he continued.
His decision has many potential strong candidates, such as Treasurer John Schroder and Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser, on tenterhooks. Both are aware that, if he were to enter the race, Kennedy would be the favorite to once again dye the state of Louisiana, governed by Democrat John Bel Edwards since 2016, red.
