NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday sought responses from the Union government, states, and Union Territories to a PIL seeking provisioning of free sanitary pads and separate toilets for adolescent girls in government, aided and residential schools to make their right to education a reality.
A bench of Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice P S Narasimha issued notices to the Centre, states and UTs on a PIL filed by Congress activist Jaya Thakur after hearing brief arguments from her counsel
Varun Thakur.
The petitioner argued that many girl students are forced not to attend school because of lack of separate toilets and absence of awareness about menstrual hygiene.
The petitioner said the inadequate menstrual hygiene management followed by the educational institutions is proving to be a major barrier in adolescent girls' access to education.
