    Great and not so great
    3 out of 5 stars
    Great and not so great
Would I recommend this product? Yes, because it has an amazing picture, great features and is better than nearly every other mini projector on the market. However, there are some things you should know before you buy. Battery life is not what is advertised. Not even close (unless my unit is defective). If you’re buying this for remote use, you’re going to be disappointed. If you’re buying it for home use, then it’s a good buy, but there are much cheaper and comparable alternatives if you’re relying on a connected power supply. Here’s my experience: I charged it 100% upon opening, prior to the first use, as instructed. Then I set it up and kicked back to watch Eurovision (2 hour 3 minute run time) on my ceiling. Prior to getting started I had to turn off auto keystone and adjust some settings because my ceiling is angled, but that took all of about 5 minutes. Only 1 hour and 15 minutes into the movie the projector displayed a notification that the device only had 20% power left before it would shut off. So I had to pause it and look around for an extension cable to plug it in so my wife and I could finish watching the movie. Four hour run time huh? Seems to be nearly a 300% exaggeration. What is extra disappointing is I have been a long time Anker customer (lots of lighting cables, magnetic car mounts, SoundCore Sport XL, PowerWave Pad etc.) so I fully bought into the entire Nebula eco system of products (Nebula Tripod, Nebula Case, and the Nebula Max) given my historically positive experience with the Anker brand. That is over a $600 investment. At that price point I feel Anker should do at least one of two things. Be honest and transparent regarding real product run time or do a better job at quality control, because the product I received is definitely not living up to what was described and or my expectations. (UPDATE: Anker customer service recommends turning off WiFi to get the full 4 hours i.e. not stream but instead playing content from an external HD. If you’re streaming than the Capsule Max is only capable of 1.5 hours, which is on par with my experience. Why would anyone do that is the question, and why not be transparent about this up front?) Finally, the UI on the Max is clunky because it leverages a version of android that is specifically made for mobile devices such as phones and tablets. I would recommend spending the extra $100 for the Capsule 2, as that UI is far superior due to the fact it is specially made for rich media viewing given the Android TV operating system. Hardware wise, the Max appears superior, on paper, as it has 16GB of internal storage compared to 8GB and it also boasts 4 hours of run time compared to the 2.5 of the Capsule 2, but that 4 hours of run time appears to be a fabrication. Software wise, the Capsule 2 takes the win. Here’s why: First and foremost, in my experience the 4 hours of runtime was not even close to what is advertised. Secondly, I do not plan on ever using local storage to store content. I can simply use an external HD or USB drive for that. Yeah the OS and installed apps use that storage, but I’m only planning on installing the 5-10 media sources so drive space should be a non issue. Furthermore, simply adding a FireTV Stick to the HD port adds a whole new level of experience to the Capsule. I have since bought (but not yet received) the Capsule 2. I’ll update this review to see if the advertised 2.5 hour run time is accurate. I also purchased the Anker PowerCore+ 26800mAh PD (+ $140) to extend battery life as the Capsule 2 leverages USB C as the power source versus the conventional DC 12V power supply of the Max. Having said all of this, Anker has always stood behind their products and been wonderful with respect to customer service. I eagerly await their reply to see how they intend to deal with this situation.

This is the best projector with this price.
I bought Anker Nebula Capsule Max 1 year ago. At first I used it for movie night, which was great. Then to protect my kid's vision, I set it up for my kid's online class (as all known, last year, the kids stayed at home and spent a lot of time for online class ). It worked very well: video is clear, and voice is clean, easy to set up, and low noise. After 1 year heavy usage (more than 4 hours every weekday), it is still perfect.

I recommended it to my friend, and my friend asked me the question "Long ago I looked at the cheaper ones around $70~$100, but never bought one. What are the differences that set a projector far apart from another in prices?"

This is what I replied him:

      I tried 3 different projectors, the price varying from $130 - $550.
This one has the pros compared to others:
      1. It can automatically focus, otherwise every time you move it, you need to manually focus again, which is way too hard ( the $130 one is like this ).
      2. The noise is much low. When I put the $130 one beside me, it is like a small airplane flying beside me but never goes away.
      3. It is small and easy to move, easy to set up. The other two I tried ($130 and $500) are both heavy and large.
      4. The battery is good, and lasts long.

After using this 1 year, I wrote this review and highly recommend this to you.

Having a home theater for years with a dedicated projector system, I was skeptical of this little device… However, I was pleasantly surprised by the portability and convenience on many levels. At 200 lumens, it was bright enough to work in a wide variety of lighting conditions and surface angles. I would not go less than 200 lumens in anything but a really dark room, or a text-only presentation.

Originally I had planned to just use it as a HDMI projector from my iPhone or laptop, but I was pleasantly surprised by the self-contained streaming apps that truly turn this into a standalone (battery-operated, Wi-Fi) TV.

Being completely self-contained, we were able to place the unit laying in bed and project a widescreen TV on the ceiling… There's always plenty of open ceiling so there's always a wide screen available! I did not test the four full hours of battery, but it had plenty of power to last through a full feature length movie. While the audio is not stereo, it is loud enough and directional enough for television watching.

The first thing that I did when I opened the box was to perform the quick and simple software upgrade from the menu… There was an update available and it took about two minutes.

I was surprised at how well the device performed on multiple services, the X direction and Y direction keystone correction allows for the unit to be placed far off center and still produce a properly proportioned wide screen picture. Sitting on the corner of my desk, I was able to project a 25 inch virtual monitor on the wall and have it quite reasonable. This would be a great Device for the Road warrior both as a second monitor and for presentations.

The airplay works well from an iOS or OS X device (it also supports Android versions of wireless screen mirroring) – but like many AirPlay devices, it's not the fastest refresh rate … so I would really only recommend it for displaying photos from your iPhone. The only thing I would add, is a easy zoom in function, this would be relatively easy to do in a software upgrade. The zoom and can be accomplished with the Keystone feature, but it takes some practice.

Overall - very impressive - very happy.

Let me start with the negatives. First, this thing is on sale all the time so I would not pay full price for it. Even on sale, it is too expensive for 720p. Also, I wish I would have spent a little more to get a brighter projector.

Speaking of brightness, even though I wish it were brighter, I am surprised by how well you can see the image with ambient light. It’s not necessarily enjoyable, but you can watch something with this indoors with the lights on.

Size is the biggest virtue here. It’s easy to take anywhere. Easy to find a place to set it up. However, there is no lens cover so I’m compelled to keep it in its case, which adds additional cost and negates much of the size advantage. There is only one official case for it and it is a square that is much larger than the projector itself.

The other great thing is the speaker. To me it is perfect for taking a minimal setup with us to the garage or on trips. It’s not audiophile quality nor does it provide a cinematic experience, but it is better than it has any right to be considering the form factor. Also, it is easy to connect to a Bluetooth speaker.

I almost sent this back to exchange for a Nebula Cosmos, but my daughter was already in love with this. The size is great, the performance is great for the size. I wish I could have compared it to the Cosmos and the Xgimi Mogo Pro or even the Mars Pro before purchasing.

This thing has brought a lot of joy to my daughter and me, especially since we can’t make it to the theater for the foreseeable future. So in that regard it has been worth every penny.

This little projector is by far the best one I’ve owned in terms of performance, picture quality, sound, size, and ease of use. I love that I can use my phone to control the navigation and can simply download and sign into apps, directly through the device, simply by connecting to WiFi. Being able to use my phone type, the tilt feature via the stand (bought separately), and auto focus are absolute game changers! Fully plan on packing this little, but powerful projector everywhere with my family for summer!

I didn't read a lot about it before my purchase. I had no idea that it had Netflix, YouTube, prime video......etc. capabilities. I was prepared to plug my fire stick into it. What a great gadget. Good picture, surprisingly big sound. Great autofocus, easy vertical and horizontal adjustment. Really will fit in your pocket. Buy. Buy. Buy.

Reviewed in Australia on March 4, 2020
TLDR: The best features for what I want, compared to the other Nebulas.

I purchased this device from a USA supplier and had it shipped to Australia. This has limited some access to on board applications but not to a great extent.

I sought out the Max due to it being 200 ANSI vs 100 ANSI (to the Neb1) and having extended battery of 4hrs play compared to the 2 Hrs of the Neb2.

It runs the most up to date pure android of the bunch but not Android Tv. I have no experience with that OS so cant compare.

The build is attractive and a good shape with small footprint. This allows good positioning in most places, especially in constricted areas. The height also allows it to be higher on the projection surface when viewing close up, ie doing the dishes and having it on the bench beside you - it sits up higher than some of the other non Neb form factors would.

When I received the unit, I was initially worried that the device used an external power source rather than a USB C connection. (I work away and always have USB chargers). This issue I found not to be a big worry as the unit actually has a bigger voltage input and will charge faster. Choice of an Australian wall plug would have been nice however.

Initial use of the device was beyond expectation. It puts out a great picture with decent sound.

The top of the device houses the onboard controls which can at times be a bit of a pain when accidentally touching it whilst moving the device and is only intuitive after some use. It's not a terrible issue however, as long as you are aware of it. The response to the onboard control surface is quick and needs only a light touch.

The included remote control is comfortable and intuitive but does have some limitations with some apps. All up it is a nice little remote. For best control the Phone based Android App is the way to go.

As mentioned, some of the native apps are USA-centric and I had issues with using the native Spotify app as the Australian service doesn't seem compatible. I can get this service from my phone instead of using the dedicated App as a work around. Also, in Australia, the Stan app is not designed for the device so I have to use HDMI input cable for copyrighted content. No Biggy as the BT speaker fills this purpose also. For someone with access to Americentric providers, there is plenty to choose from however it would be nice if it was more global in it's providers. I will try to download more Aussie apps from the play store to improve this in time.

Connectivity wise it is good but initially I had issues with casting video from my phone (Note 9). I contacted the online chat assistance and discussed this and at the same time requested the Google Play Service code and downloaded it. Nice. This gave me access to Play, Photos, Chrome, etc. I had issues navigating the Play Services, in particular, the area to punch in my password would not scroll to the area to hit enter. After trying to log in on a few of the apps, I found one where it would allow input - I cant remember which one but once I got it in all was good. I downloaded Kodi and that was a wicked win. I have thousands of movies for Kodi with all fan art and ancillary files to make it a real winner.

After all this, the casting from my phone worked well. I'm not sure what made it become more stable but alas it has reduced a need for phone to decide HDMI cablec as in the mean time I had purchased a USB C to HDMI cable which also allowed good stable casting from the phone also. This however allows the use of Samsung DX which with a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard makes productivity possible on the road.

The USB input work good with a USB stick but my actual hard drive would baulk every five to ten minutes and need to be reset to the movies prior position. I think this is possibly a power supply issue. USB input navigation is just as you want it.
I am yet to use the Aux input jack... Or is it a head phone jack?

Using the device is great. Its small and able to be transported easily. The auto focus is great. The horizontal angle projector adjustment also great however could be improved by adding a setting where you can chose to be casting the picture on a vertical (a wall) or a horizontal (ceiling) surface. Also the usage could be improved by allowing the screen size/angle to be fine tuned whilst playing video, rather than having to do it before or after interrupting the screening.

On a potentially negative note, I did have one scare where after removing the Max from my bag (where it was well protected - neoprene stubby holders fit around it snuggly), it had a black area on the screen when projecting. I panicked and ordered a refund (on the last day allowed) but later that night when I tapped it gently, the mark was gone. I can only assume there was a spec of dust in the device on the internal surface somehow. This would have had to have been from manufacture due to the care I have shown the device. Anyhow, I will get back to them if it becomes an issue again under warranty.

With a small tripod it projects anywhere or use it without on flat surfaces. It is basically a TV you can take and use anywhere that is dark enough. Even inside during the day with brighter light at close range ie with about a 30 cm (1 ft) wide projection it throws a ripper visual.

I have downloaded an app off Play (airdroid) to transfer files from my phone to it also. I'm looking forward to finding out other options from Play that can enhance the usability. I tried using a VPN app (wang) to bypass local wifi restrictions at work but that has not worked well at this stage. I have not loaded any games on it yet but casting from the phone works well to play games the size of the whole wall.

I love this little machine. I take it every where and treat it like a newborn. I have a sheet on the backyard fence for summer movie nights, we sit in bed and watch the big screen on the ceiling and when on the boat I can put up an A3 sheet and cast to that in many places. As mentioned before, I can do the dishes or get dinner ready and watch the Mandalorian on the wall right beside the sink. This is a Best buy. All up Awesome kit.

      Pros-
      Small footprint.
      Good batt life.
      Great pic.
      App upgradable.

      Cons-
Needs a few software tweaks for adjusting the projection.
Ability to change app layout is limited.

I bought the Nebula to transform my camper van into a cinema cabin, and to be honest it works perfectly ! Its really quiet (no high pitch sounds that often comes with this type of projector) and it has a amazing image quality. The speakers are totally fine for the size !
Its true that the battery doesnt last 4h in high power mode but once you know it, its not impossible to overcome the issue. Would totally recommend for any use !

The projector performs better than we expected. Perfect in a dark room but not great with the lights on when the movie is dark. Sounds is surprisingly good. Easily connects to iPad and it will screen mirror. Onboard Netflix is helpful. Apple TV and Prime TV need hdmi cable to play (for copyright reasons), which is a bit silly but not a huge hassle since it can be pretty easily connected to the iPad. Also will connect to a standard camera tripod - we got the one with the wrap around legs - projector screen can be rotated 180 which really helped for finding the most convenient position.

This projector really is amazing, especially if you can get it on-sale, as we did. Its size and portability really makes it great for recreational use. It would be ideal for tiny-home living, vanlife, or how we use it, in our cargo trailer camper conversion. It is the size of a pop can. We stow it in a small bag in the cupboard, take it out, screw it onto a mini-tripod, and set it on the counter. Currently we are just using a white bedsheet as a screen, but we have a projector screen coming in the mail. It is a comfortable movie experience at our setting of 100" screen. It allows us to plug in a USB and play our own movies, connects to wifi to use Netflix (only with your phone as the remote, due to streaming regulation) Disney+, can even download netflix shows directly to the projector for offline use.
The only downside to this projector is that it cannot charge on a 12V charger (like a phone charger) it MUST be plugged in. We use it camping. The battery states 3-4 hours, but its more like 2ish, as usually we need to have the volume rather high for a comfortable movie experience. After one movie it is pretty close to needing a charge. In order to charge it, we must have our inverter on for up to 3 hours, or have a generator running that long. The upgrade to Capsule II solves this issue, as it can charge off 12v, but at a much higher price-point (hundreds more than we paid) so the Capsule Max will do for us!
Overall, we are extremely satisfied with this product. The quality feels excellent. I do wish it had a sliding lens cover, we keep it in its original foam lined box for protection. In our small space, our kids can go to bed and my husband and I can connect our headphones via bluetooth to the projector and still enjoy a movie on the big screen. A+!
