BENGALURU: A head pontiff of a mutt allegedly hanged himself from the window grill of the mutt's puja house in Karnataka's Ramanagara on Monday. Police sources said that some miscreants are suspected to have blackmailed Basavalinga Swamy over some issues. Police have drawn up a list of people to be questioned.
"We will question those who had been close to the Swami ji and had been in constant touch with him.

We have learnt that some miscreants had made video calls to him and harassed him. They will also be questioned," said a police officer.
In September, Basava Siddalinga Swamy of the Sri Guru Madiwaleshwar Mutt in Belagavi was found dead at the mutt after his name allegedly figured in an audio clip linked to a sex scandal of a prominent mutt in Chitradurga. In December 2021, Basavalinga Swamy of Chilume Mutt in Ramanagar was found dead in his room after he was allegedly upset about his deteriorating health.
Basavalinga Swamy became the head pontiff of the mutt in Kempapura in the year 1997 and celebrated his silver jubilee at the helm just a few months ago.
Kudur police handed over his body to the mutt after the autopsy. Hundreds of disciples and pontiffs from other mutts flocked the mutt as news of his death spread.
Ramesh, a teacher at the Bande Mutt school who filed the complaint about the seer's death, told police he met the seer at 5pm on Sunday and went home. He received a call from Ambarish, a mutt employee, around 6.10am, saying the seer wasn't opening his room and not taking his calls. Ramesh rushed to the spot and knocked repeatedly. He went to the rear of the room and found the seer hanging from the window grill. Ramesh and Ambarish entered the room by breaking open the door and found him dead.
