While energy bills are soaring across Europe partly due to the war in Ukraine, the price of natural gas, oil, and electricity continues to go up. However, this is not a worry for this small town in Germany called Feldheim, which has been completely self-sufficient for a decade.

While most people in Europe are worried about energy bills and trying their best to save energy, the small 130 people town of Feldheim hasn’t had to consider this.

The town is only about an hour and a half south of Berlin and first launched an experiment in the mid-1990s where they set up a handful of wind turbines to provide electricity to the town. They kept going and built a local grid, solar panels, battery storage, and even some more turbines bringing their total to 55. A biogas plant was expanded that helps pump hot water through the village and provide central heating. Now, they also have a hydrogen production facility in the works.

Feldheim is now a tourist destination for visitors from around the world. They are a prime example of how it is possible to provide eco-friendly energy to people. Although the same approach implemented in Feldheim can’t be used everywhere, it’s a great example to show the world that it can be done.

Projects worldwide are developing new ways to utilize solar panels and move away from dirty fossil fuels. Architecture students in Barcelona just built a solar-powered greenhouse that uses 50 percent less energy than it produces. Virginia is transforming abandoned coal mines into solar farms, and a start-up is helping retrofit old buildings in Brooklyn to use clean energy. The latest climate report from the IPCC is a final warning for governments around the world about Global warming, so it’s great to see companies taking the initiative and working towards a renewable future!
