Maanu Paul outstanding advocate for Maori
Māori Party president John Tamihere says the late Maanu Paul was an outstanding advocate for Māori with an extraordinary mind.
Mr Paul died yesterday aged 83.
His involvement with the New Zealand Maori Council dates back to the early 1960s, and in that role he contributed to significant claims including for fisheries, forests and intellectual property.
As an advocate and negotiator he could be formidable.
“He would just come out of right hand field with an outstanding proposition and was able to think on his feet as much as anything else so he was an extraordinary advocate on behalf of not just Mataatua whanau and Ngati Awa whanau and Ngati Manawa whanau, he was an outstanding advocate for us all,” Mr Tamihere says.
The tangi for Maanu Paul is at Wairaka Marae in Whakatane, with the nehu at 10am Saturday.
