KOLKATA: For Anuprabha Das Mazumder, it’s a major battle won. She has finally got “Transgender”, or TG, stamped on her
Aadhaar card, becoming the first person in West Bengal, and probably in the country, to get the gender of her choice printed on an important identity document in India.
Biologically a male, the 29-year-old identifies herself as a
transgender. But till now her Aadhaar card bore her original name, Achinta Das Mazumder, and mentioned her gender as “Male”.
The process was set in motion this July when UIDAI included TG identity cards as among valid supporting documents for verification. Anuprabha had received her TG card from the Union ministry of social justice and empowerment in May and applied for a fresh Aadhaar as soon as UIDAI notification was published.
“I was facing a lot of problem as my old Aadhaar mentioned my gender as male. Now, the new card has my name and the gender I identity myself with. I am overwhelmed as this means acceptance of the third gender,” she told TOI.
